Miller-McCune is a newish magazine that summarizes and critiques new research for an audience of non-specialists. It has some interesting stuff and I suggest you check it out.

Your policy suggestions does lead me to one question, what's the impact of perceived closeness of our relationship with states that violate person's physical integrity?
One common hypothesis, consistent with some terrorists stated claims, is that the U.S. is targeted as a far enemy that backs the near enemy of "illegitimate" regimes. If we are unable to get those regimes to change their behavior regarding respect for physical integrity, is distancing ourselves a second best solution?
